Emily Alice Vincent (nee Buzzard, nee Millar) was born into the Millar family of Victoria, on 20th November 1865. She was the daughter of Charles Gibson Millar and Mary Alice Kenney. I have not been able to source actual documents on the emigration of the Millar family to Australia however her grandfather, John Millar C.E. (Civil Engineer), was the first from the Millar family to emigrate from Ireland. Others have written accounts of the Millar family emigration which I shall now recount.

John and his wife, Elizabeth Anne Franks, emigrated to Victoria in 1854. They had five children with them. The children were: Charles Gibson 1830 - 1900, Elizabeth Mary c. 1842 - 1891, Edwin Franks 1844 - 1928, Emerson Tennent c. 1847 - 1879 and Emily Blanche 1850 - 1923. They had two other girls who did not undertake the voyage. Adelaide Amelia, born 1829 but who died in 1853 in Gloucestershire, England whilst staying with her uncle, and Julia Matilda, born 1853, who married in Belfast, Ireland in 1855 and re-settled in London, where she died in 1874.

Charles Gibson Millar, together with his brother Edwin Franks, later became very wealthy as their company, Millar’s Karri and Jarrah Forest’s Co. Ltd. supplied timber for sleepers and bridges construction on many of the major rail projects in Australia in the late 1800’s. They also had large investments in gold mines which proliferated in Australia at that time.

Charles Gibson was a keen yachtsman and in the late 1800’s was “in favour” at the Royal Court of Queen Victoria, through his close association with the then Prince of Wales, Queen Victoria’s eldest son Albert Edward, who became upon Victoria’s death, King Edward VII of England from 1901 to 1910.

Emily’s first marriage was to Alfred Ernest Buzzard on 22nd December 1885, in Victoria. From their marriage there were four children, Millar, Vera, Marjorie and Alys.
